Veterinary Medicine bursaries 2023 South Africa

Veterinary Science is an umbrella category of medical science that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, control and treatment of medical issues in animals. Veterinary Scientists (Vets) work with both domesticated and wild animals in aspects such as breeding, nutrition, health, rehabilitation, and more. Vets have a key understanding of animal’s behaviours, cells biology, nutrition, psychology, diseases, pathology, and more.

To qualify to study a Degree in Veterinary Science, one needs to show academic excellence in their previous studies, primarily in Mathematics and Physical Science. To make yourself a front runner in the application for a Veterinary Science qualification, it is also advisable that you have a proven history of not only an interest in the field but also various volunteer work with animals and rehabilitation centres.

Once you start studying Veterinary Science, you will be required to complete an undergraduate programme in biology or animal science. Thereafter, you will move on to your Graduate studies where the entire course could take 5-years or more. Generally, during the first couple of years of Veterinary studies, you will be introduced to the background knowledge as well as the theory of veterinary studies. In the middle of your studies, you will then be able to specialise in a specific field of interest within the discipline and near the end of your qualification, you will experience work placement within a facility such as a zoo, clinic, or rehabilitation centre.

Some possible careers within the Veterinary field are working at an Animal Rescue centre, Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, within a Medical Vet Office, becoming a Veterinarian, Vet Technician/ Technologist/ Assistant, or an Animal Behavioural Scientist.
