Allan Gray Bursary 2023

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was founded by Allan Gray in 2005 out of his dream to create a sustainable contribution to the country, by helping students who are the future entrepreneurs of Southern Africa.

The Foundation receives its funding from the donation of Allan Gray Limited’s taxed profits. The Foundation currently operates in 4 countries across Africa, namely South Africa; Namibia; Swaziland and Botswana.

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship programme aims to provide funding for students to study at university level, as well as providing support and development for those who demonstrate an entrepreneurial mindset.

Allan Gray Bursary Eligible Field

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is inviting students to apply for bursary funding, for the 2023 academic year.

The bursary is currently open to Matric students, for undergraduate degree studies within these fields:

  • Arts
  • Commerce
  • Engineering
  • Health Science (excluding Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science)
  • Humanities
  • Law
  • Science

Note: applications are currently closed for 1st year students and will reopen later in the year.

The Fellowship Programme aims to help students by cultivating entrepreneurship in Fellows, and ensuring that the Programme results in learners seeking to create entrepreneurship opportunities. Successful candidates will be boarded as Candidate Allan Gray Fellows. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation award up to 100 fellowships every year, to deserving students.

What Does Allan Gray Bursary Cover?

The fellowship award will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, prescribed books, accommodation at university residence, meals, monthly living stipend and a tutor allowance.

Students with a total annual household income of R1 million and less will receive full funding, and students with a total annual household income of more than R1 million will receive needs-based funding.

Students also receive support for personal development (mentorship, industry mentor and like-minded community); access to entrepreneurial mindset development (workshops, speakers and seminars, access to business incubation and experiential exercises).

Allan Gray Bursary Selection Process

The selection process will include the following steps and dates:

Matric students:

  • Step 1: applications must be submitted by May 2023.
  • Step 2: shortlisted applicants will be contacted and invited to attend an interview in July 2023.
  • Step 3: shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a Selection Camp in September 2023.

All applicants will receive feedback after every step of the selection process, to keep them updated on the status of their application.

Allan Gray Bursary Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Matric students:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be under 21 years old or younger in 2022
  • You must be currently in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum result of 60% for Mathematics or a minimum result of 80% for Mathematical Literacy in Grade 11 final results
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 70% for Grade 11 final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • You must intend on studying towards a degree qualification within one of the fields of study listed above
  • You must intend on studying at one of the following partner universities: University of Johannesburg, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of the Free State
  • You must believe in the future of South Africa
  • You must have strong entrepreneurial flair and passion

1st year students:

  • You must be a South African citizen
  • You must be 22 years old or younger in 2021
  • You must be studying towards a degree qualification within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • You must be in your 1st year of study (funding is not available for students in other years of study)
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in your June 2021 exams
  • You must be studying at one of the following partner universities: University of Johannesburg/ University of the Witwatersrand/ University of Pretoria/ University of Cape Town/ University of the Western Cape/ Stellenbosch University/ Rhodes University/ Nelson Mandela University/ University of KwaZulu-Natal/ University of the Free State/ TSIBA
  • You must believe in the future of South Africa
  • You must have a strong entrepreneurial flair and passion

Over and above the requirements, students who have done the following will be a preferred candidate:

  • Leadership role at school or university (including being a prefect/ sports team captain/ member of the SRC)
  • Formal awards at school or university (including Academic/ Cultural/ Service awards)
  • Participation in any sporting or cultural activities at school, university or outside this environment
  • Started an activity or project that has left a positive impact in your school, university, community or environment
  • An occasion where you have achieved success despite difficulty
  • Demonstration of tenacity, perseverance and goal-oriented behaviour
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Ability to manage your emotions, as well as be aware of the emotions of people around you and react appropriately
